ISTANBUL

Istanbul City
Istanbul is no longer the capital of Turkey, but remains the country’s cultural and business center. It is set in a stunning location, surrounded by water – the narrow strait of the Bosphorus and the serene Sea of Marmara separating Europe from Asia. As Byzantium, Constantinople and finally, Istanbul, it has been the capital of three Empires, each leaving their mark in the form of stunning palaces, castles, mosques, churches and monuments.
Highlights of Istanbul - Best Sites of Istanbul to Visit
Topkapi Palace - So much to see here that you need at least half a day. Don’t miss the intriguing Harem, the stunning emeralds and the ‘Spoonmakers’ diamond.
Yerebatan Cistern – Explore the world under the pavements, and experience the atmosphere of the cisterns of the Byzantine city, with their hundreds of columns, artfully lit, to a soundtrack of classical music.
Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya) – Marvel at its stunning mosaics and the incredible freestanding dome.
The Blue Mosque – If you only have time to visit one mosque make it this one, if you are in Istanbul for longer, take in the Suleymaniye too.
The Grand Bazaar – You will find yourself buying things you never knew you needed in this maze of literally hundreds of shops.
Take a boat trip on the Bosporus for the best views of the city.
Eating out and Entertainment
Nightlife in Istanbul is a unique mix – you can find the latest chic clubs or a traditional café with cushions on the floor, where you can smoke a hookah pipe or nargile. Wherever you choose to eat, you are likely to find delicious food made from fresh ingredients, and can expect good value for money. The variety and standard of restaurants is excellent, with stunning views as standard.
Istanbul’s Black Sea Coast
The Black Sea Coast of Istanbul – You will be amazed to find such beautiful beaches and green environment so near the big city. Fresh fish and warm village people are the extra bonus.
Istanbul’s Islands
The Princes Islands – If you have time, a visit to these charming islands in the Sea of Marmara, just off the coast of Istanbul, is a must.
Marmara, Avsa
Almost centrally located in the Sea of Marmara are the pretty islands, Marmara and Avsa. Famed for their wine and fish, these sites offer wonderful shorelines. Marmara island is full of historical treasures which increase its attractiveness. Here is the "Mermer Plaj" (Marble Beach) which takes its name from the marbles for which the town is famous.

PERGAMON

Pergamon is one of the pearls in the chain of Western Anatolia. As a training to improve patient's level of human, Acropolis was found at 335 m high altitude.

On the plain of Bakircay Greek people founded a city and named it after Pergamos (a mythical character in Greek legends). Then people built theaters to show heroic legends as a play in here to teach new generations, and today still we study them in our schools as Prehistorical theater examples.

Also, the city of Pergamon is an example of firsts; first parchment, first Asian library, first hospital complex, first altar house, first illness cures via psychotherapy, first and most well known emblem of medicine, first large-scale feast were held in here.

Hammams for medical purposes were built here. Now it’s time to discover all the details of this marble city.

GALLIPOLI

Gallipoli (Turkish: Gelibolu) is a peninsula locality in north-western Turkey, close to Istanbul. The Gallipoli Peninsula is the site of extensive First World War battlefields and memorials on the north part of the Dardanelles Strait. It is a commemorative site for the Allied (British Empire, France) and Turkish forces who fought, died and were wounded there. The Gallipoli Campaign also known as the Battle of the Dardanelles was very costly for both sides, and casualties and losses amount to 220,000 with a 59% casualty rate for the Allied forces, and 253,000 with a 60% casualty rate for the Turkish forces.

The battle resonated profoundly among some nations involved. In Turkey, the battle is perceived as a defining moment in the history of the Turkish people a final surge in the defense of the motherland as the centuries-old Ottoman Empire was crumbling; and in Australia and New Zealand, the then perceived duty to serve their "Mother Country" Britain, resulted in their military defeat, but their sacrifice and heroism marked the birth of a separate national consciousness in both of these countries.

The Gallipoli peninsula is one of the most sacred sites for the Turkish people, with many monuments such as the Monument of Martyrs erected in the honor of the Turkish soldiers who died in the Battle of the Dardanelles against the Allied forces, whose defeat staved off a potential invasion of Turkey. The victory over the Allies is celebrated on 18 March as Canakkale Zaferi (Canakkale Victory), every year, with tens of thousands of Turks attending the events on the battlefields and memorials.

The area around Anzac Cove is particularly significant for Australians and New Zealanders, whose armies received their baptism in fire on the cliffs there, and carved a fine military reputation under extreme adversity and enormous loss of life; and this military disaster marked the beginning of a separate Australian and New Zealand nationhood. The 1915 landings and battles are commemorated by Australians and New Zealanders on ANZAC Day25 April, every year. At this time especially, Gallipoli becomes a place of pilgrimage for many Aussies and Kiwis who want to honor the memory of their forbears.

There are three main battlefield areas - Cape Helles (Turkish: Seddulbahir), Anzac / Pine Ridge and Suvla Bay (which has fewer places to visit). Depending on how detailed your itinerary is, it would be possible to visit the main sites of interest, particularly around Cape Helles and Anzac/Pine Ridge, in a single day. More realistically, two or three days allows plenty of time for an extensive tour, taking in all the battlefield sites, cemeteries and memorials. Must sees include: The Cannakale Martyrs Memorial (near Cape Helles); The British Memorial at Cape Helles; Anzac Cove; Pine Ridge Australian Memorial; New Zealand Monument, Chunuk Bair, Ataturk Statue.

Aside from the 1915 battlefields, why not visit the new Gelibolu Milli Park visitors center where there are excellent displays relating to the natural history of the peninsula. You can also visit the ancient fortress of Kilitbahir south of Eceabat or take a ferry across the Straits to Asia; from Canakkale, drive to what is reputed to be the site of Ancient Troy (signposted Troia) about 30 kilometers to the south. The ruins of the legendary city - complete with (reconstructed) wooden horse - are open to the public.
The Gallipoli campaign took place between April and December 1915 in an effort to take the Dardanelles from the Turkish Ottoman Empire (an ally of Germany and Austria) and thus force it out of the war. Some 60,000 Australians and 18,000 New Zealanders were part of a larger British force. Some 26,000 Australians and 7,571 New Zealanders were wounded; and 7,594 Australians and 2,431 NZs were killed. In numerical terms, Gallipoli was a minor campaign, but it took on considerable national and personal importance to the Australians and New Zealanders who fought there.

The Gallipoli Campaign was Australia's and New Zealand's introduction to the Great War. Many Australians and New Zealanders fought on the Peninsula from the day of the landings (April 25, 1915) until the evacuation of 20 December 1915. The 25th April is the New Zealand equivalent of Armistice Day and is marked as the ANZAC day in both countries with Dawn Parades and other services in every city and town. Shops are closed in the morning. It is a very important day to Australians and New Zealanders for a variety of reasons that have changed and transmuted over the years.

CAPPADOCIA

CAPPADOCIA, in other words katpatuka, Land of Beautiful Horses. Cappadocia is one of the flowers of the world with history, one of the most amazing geography, and  variety of culture it has. Hence, this extraordinary feature has drawn attention of the world and has been included into World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1985. Turkey is one of the nine countries taking place in World Heritage List.

History of Cappadocia
The earliest record of the name of Cappadocia dates from the late 6th century BC, when it appears in the trilingual inscriptions of two early Achaemenid kings, Darius I and Xerxes, as one of the countries (Old Persian) of the Persian Empire. In these lists of countries, the Old Persian name is Katpatuka, the land of beautiful horses.

History of Cappadocia dates back to Paleolithic Age. The prehistoric settlements of the area are Koskhoyuk (Kosk Mound) in Nigde, Aksaray Asikli Mound, Nevsehir Civelek cave and, in the southeast, Kultepe, Kanis and Alisar in the environs of Kayseri. First known local people in history of Cappadocia are Assurians, establishing trade colonies in Anatolia and formed first trade colonies. Today they are turned into cave hotels of Cappadocia.

This area with unusual topographic characteristics was regarded as sacred and called, in the Scythian/khatti language, as "Khepatukha" meaning "the Country of the People of the Chief God Hepat". The tablets called Cappadocian Tablets and the Hittite works of art in Alisar are of the important remains dating from 2000s B.C. After 1200s B.C., the Tabal principality, of the Khatti Branches of Scythians, became strong and founded the Kingdom of Tabal.

Following the Late Hittite and Persian areas, the Cappadocian Kingdom was established in 332 B.C. During the Roman era, the area served as a shelter for the early escaping Christians. There are also several underground cities used by early Christians as hideouts in Cappadocia. After Romans, Cappadocia was under domination of Seljuk's and Ottomans.

Location of Cappadocia
Cappadocia Region located in the center of the Anatolian Peninsula; in the center of what is now Turkey, with its valleys, canyons, hills and unusual rock formations. (Rose Valley, Love Valley, Monk's Valley, Zelve Valley, Ihlara Valley, Dervent Valley) you are able to see them through "red tour" and "green tour". Cappadocia is surrounded by Aksaray, Kayseri, Kırsehir, Nigde and Nevsehir city where these rock formations are widespread as to the others.

The relief consists of a high plateau over 1000 m in altitude that is pierced by volcanic peaks, with Mount Erciyes (ancient Argaeus) near Kayseri (ancient Caesarea) being the tallest at 3916 m. The boundaries of historical Cappadocia are vague, particularly towards the west. To the south, the Taurus Mountains form the boundary with Cilicia and separate Cappadocia from the Mediterranean Sea

To the west, Cappadocia is bounded by the historical regions of Lycaonia to the southwest and Galatia to the northwest. The Black Sea coastal ranges separate Cappadocia from Pontus and the Black Sea, while to the east Cappadocia is bounded by the upper Euphrates, before that river bends to the southeast to flow into Mesopotamia, and the Armenian Highland. This results in an area approximately 400 km (250 mi) east–west and 250 km (160 mi) north–south.

Landscape  of Cappadocia
60 million years ago, Taurus Mountains raised up in 3rd geologic age. Volcanos started erupting with the compression of North Anatolian plateau. Mount Erciyes, Hasandag and Golludag, between two of them, spumed forth lava to the region. Ashes collected in the plateau formed a soft ash layer. The upper side of ash layer was covered with a thin lava layer consisted of basalt in some areas. Basalt cracked and fell apart. Rains started eroding soft tufa by weeping through the cracks. Winds also took part in the formation.

Consequently, cones with hard basalt hat came into existence. Local people gave a name to these interesting and different kinds of rocks: "Fairy Chimneys".
